📜 Our History​

A timeline takes you from the initial contribution by the Catena-X consortia in 2023, through the KIT 2.0 architecture, the extension beyond automotive and the cross-industry collaboration with Factory-X and the Eclipse Dataspace Working Group, all the way to what is ahead.

🚀 The Tractus-X Accelerator (2026 – 2029)​

The newest milestone on the timeline is the Tractus-X Accelerator, a cohort-based support program for projects, developers and organizations, supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE). It lowers the technical and organizational barriers to entry and focuses on:

• Structured onboarding and qualification of new projects and developers
• Test and development infrastructure
• Targeted mentoring by experienced community members
• Further development of governance, release and quality processes
• Sustainable community and exchange formats

Our upcoming Second International Eclipse Tractus-X Hackathon on November 6, 2026 at ARENA2036 is organized as part of the Accelerator.

The hackathon is organized as part of the Eclipse Tractus-X Accelerator, our cohort-based program that lowers the barriers to joining and actively contributing to the Eclipse Tractus-X open-source community.

🎯 The Mission: Re-architecting the Eclipse Tractus-X Portal​

The main reason for this hackathon is the re-architecture of the Eclipse Tractus-X Portal. The Portal is the front door of every data space built on Tractus-X technology — it is where companies get onboarded, register, and start participating. We want to make it:

• ✨ Simpler — a leaner architecture with fewer moving parts
• 🔧 Easier to maintain — so the community can keep it evolving without a steep learning curve
• ⚡ More performant — fast where it matters, from the first login to the last onboarding step
• 🚀 Easier to use for data space onboardings — so onboarding into a data space with Tractus-X tech becomes straightforward, for operators and participants alike

🧠 Design Thinking + 💻 Programming​

This is not a "code first, think later" hackathon. We will start with design thinking: together we look at how onboardings work today, where the friction is, and what a simpler Portal architecture should look like. Then we switch into programming mode and start building the first pieces of that architecture — hands-on, in the open, in the Tractus-X repositories.

Whether you are an architect, a developer, a product person, or someone who has onboarded companies into a data space and knows the pain points first-hand — your perspective is needed at the table.

🔙 Looking Back — Hackathon I in Bilbao​

In February 2026, the Eclipse Tractus-X community met for its first international hackathon in Bilbao, Spain — a full day of coding on the Tractus-X Identity Hub Wallet and the Industry Core Hub, hosted by our Project Lead Mikel Garcia and LKS Next. It showed what a room full of motivated developers can achieve in a single day, and it is exactly that spirit we want to bring to ARENA2036 in November.

Hello Eclipse Tractus-X Community!

We are excited to announce the official release of Eclipse Tractus-X Release 26.03, published on March 18, 2026. This release continues the evolution of the open-source dataspace ecosystem with improvements across multiple components, updated KITs, and ongoing contributions from the global community. As always, this milestone is the result of the collaborative effort of developers, maintainers, and contributors across the Tractus-X ecosystem. The release strengthens interoperability, documentation, and platform stability, enabling organizations to build and operate sovereign industrial data spaces more effectively.

Following a successful vote among the committee and project leads, Eclipse Tractus-X has been included under the purview of the Eclipse Dataspace Working Group. This partnership marks a pivotal moment in our journey and sends a clear signal: Eclipse Tractus-X is more ready than ever to drive the adoption of future dataspace solutions and accelerate dataspace development.

Making this announcement at the Dataspace Symposium—bringing together industry leaders, innovators, and standardization experts from around the world—underscores the international significance of this partnership and our shared commitment to advancing the dataspace ecosystem.

What Does This Collaboration Mean?​

Think of this partnership like a marriage—a strategic alliance where both the Eclipse Dataspace Working Group and Eclipse Tractus-X commit to pushing each other forward. Together, we're strengthening the foundation for interoperable, standardized dataspaces that will transform industries worldwide.

Through this collaboration, Eclipse Tractus-X pledges to:

Our Commitment to Open Source Dataspace Standards​

It's no secret that Eclipse Tractus-X has been at the forefront of implementing key open source dataspace protocols written by the Eclipse Dataspace Working Group:

• The Dataspace Protocol (DSP) - already deeply integrated into our technology stack
• The Decentralized Claims Protocol (DCP) - actively adopted and utilized across our implementations

The announcement at this prestigious event underscores the importance of this partnership and our shared commitment to advancing the dataspace ecosystem on an international scale. And as a project under the governance of the Eclipse Foundation, we are committed to continue to push the adoption of open standards developed at our foundation.

What is not happening now​

• Eclipse Tractus-X remains sovereign as a project under the Eclipse Foundation Governance as always and has the total freedom to choose its roadmap, features, which additional protocols to adopt and scope.
• The EDWG has no "governance" over Eclipse Tractus-X - The collaboration is a mutual agreement between Eclipse Tractus-X and the Eclipse Dataspace Working Group (EDWG), which can be finalized at any time, however by having this partnership both parties can benefit from this agreement. The "governance" over Eclipse Tractus-X continues to be the rules from the Eclipse Foundation and the TRGs (Tractus-X Release Guidelines) which are the rules of the Eclipse Tractus-X project.

This partnership represents more than just organizational alignment—it's a commitment to the future of dataspaces. By combining the EDWG's expertise in standardization with Eclipse Tractus-X's proven track record in implementation and pushing adoption, we're creating a powerful feedback loop that benefits the entire dataspace ecosystem.

For a feature to be included in the Open Planning, the following conditions must be met:

• Status must be Backlog – Committers and Expert Groups can set this status after the feature is fully refined.
• All categories in the feature template must be filled – Do not delete any sections from the template.
• Milestone is NOT set – This will be assigned during the Open Planning session.
• Contributor and Committer must be assigned.
• Topic/Product must be set.

During the session, if there is a common alignment among the participants, the feature milestone can be set to 26.06, meaning it will be developed in the upcoming release.

Important Notes and Hints​

• Keep the board clean – there are still features with older milestones that have not yet been completed.
• Do not delete any sections from the feature template, except for KITs.
• For KITs, only the Contributor, Committer, and Description fields need to be filled.

We are excited to announce the launch of KIT 2.0 Architecture - a major redesign of how we visualize and organize our KIT ecosystem. This update brings a fresh perspective to understanding the layered architecture of Eclipse Tractus-X, making it easier than ever to explore and navigate our comprehensive collection of KITs.

What is a KIT?​

KIT, short for Keep It Together, is an open-source toolbox with comprehensive documentation that enables multiple stakeholders (Business, Solution Providers, Developers) to build interoperable applications compatible with the Eclipse Tractus-X dataspace technologies, and support the compliance with industrial standards from standarization organizations (Catena-X e.V., IDTA, ISO/DIN, EDWG, Manufacturing-X, etc.) and in some cases enable regulatory compliance.

A KIT provides everything needed to implement and deploy specific business scenarios within a dataspace environment - from architectural guidance and API specifications to reference implementations and operational procedures. Each KIT serves as a complete, self-contained package that enables developers, operators, and business stakeholders to understand, build, and run solutions that are interoperable across the dataspace network.

What's New in KIT 2.0 Architecture?​

The KIT framework has evolved significantly from version 1.0 to 2.0 to support the growing needs of multiple dataspaces and industries. This transition represents a fundamental shift in how we approach dataspace interoperability - moving from a single-industry focus to enabling multiple industries to leverage the same foundational technologies while maintaining the flexibility to address industry-specific requirements through modular extensions.

Standardized KIT Development Process​

With KIT 2.0, we've established a comprehensive framework and clear guidelines for creating and maintaining KITs. Our Tractus-X Release Guidelines (TRGs) provide a structured approach to KIT development, ensuring consistency, quality, and interoperability across all KITs.

TRG 10 - Keep it Together (KIT)​

The TRG 10 series defines the complete lifecycle and requirements for KIT development:

• TRG 10.01 - KIT Architecture: Defines the architectural categories and layered classification of KITs within the Eclipse Tractus-X ecosystem

KIT Master Data - Single Source of Truth​

All KIT metadata is centralized in a single source of truth - the KIT Master Data Overview. This comprehensive registry contains:

• Metadata: Version numbers, last updated dates, maturity levels, and graduation dates
• Architecture Classification: Which layer each KIT belongs to (Dataspace Foundation, Industry Core, etc.)
• Dataspace Assignments: Which dataspaces each KIT supports (Catena-X, Manufacturing-X, etc.)
• Links & Resources: Routes to documentation, repositories, and related materials
• Lifecycle Status: Current state (Incubating, Graduated, Deprecated) and progression history

Based on the upstream Identity Hub, one of our brave proud committers Carlos Diez Rodriguez, has created an effective tutorial which will guide you from 0 to hero on how to start developing with the Eclipse Tractus-X Identity Hub!

What are our objectives?​

We are restarting the development of the Identity Hub (Wallet) in Eclipse Tractus-X.

Our objectives are the following:

• Create a well documented identity hub using the Eclipse Dataspace Components framework.
• Implement a multi "-X" dataspace support wallet.
• Reduce complexity for applications that are willing to use the wallet.
• Make a reality in Eclipse Tractus-X aspect model credentials issuance, based on frameworks like the dpp-verification and the future Data Trust & Security KIT!
• Demonstrate the issuance, holding, request and management of membership credentials.

Alignment Day for R25.12​

The Alignment Day focuses on addressing open questions and unresolved dependencies from features planned for Release 25.12. This means we are highly dependent on your questions. We want to align and get a better understanding about the related features. This meeting is a possibility to connect. Even if you don't have questions, it could be interesting anyway.

Joint Open Planning​

Prerequisites for features to be considered in Open Planning​

For a feature to be included in the Open Planning, the following conditions must be met:

• Status must be 'Backlog' – Committers and Expert Groups can set this status after the feature is fully refined.
• All categories in the feature template must be filled – Do not delete any sections from the template.
• Milestone is NOT set – This will be assigned during the Open Planning session.
• Contributor and Committer must be assigned.
• Topic/Product must be set.

During the session, if there is a common alignment among the participants, the feature milestone can be set to 25.12, meaning it will be developed in the upcoming release.

Important Notes and Hints​

• Keep the board clean – there are still features with older milestones that have not yet been completed.
• Do not delete any sections from the feature template, except for KITs.
• For KITs, only the Contributor, Committer, and Description fields need to be filled.

We’re happy to announce that the Eclipse Tractus-X website has been successfully updated. The underlying documentation framework, Docusaurus, is now running on version 3.7.0.

This upgrade was essential, as we were previously using an outdated version that limited our flexibility and security.

What's New?​

Visually, not much has changed — but you might notice that the News Blog is now grouped by year for improved clarity. While the visible updates are minimal, this upgrade clears the path for more improvements in the future.

Improvements and Cleanups​

The update was not only a technical migration but also an opportunity to perform a comprehensive cleanup. Here’s what was improved:

• KITs folder structure is now consistently using kebab-case naming.
• Labels such as "Software Development View" are now standardized across the site.
• Sidebar and dropdown entries for KITs now use consistent and full naming.
• All existing KIT versions were reviewed and cleaned up.
• Obsolete plugins such as open-api and remote were removed.
• References to the API Hub were added where possible.
• Node.js version was upgraded from 16 to 18 (used in GitHub workflows).
• Many previously broken links have been fixed.

Known Limitations​

We are still seeing build-time warnings caused by certain SVG files generated with Draw.io. These SVGs render correctly in the browser, but we plan to improve how we handle them going forward.

What You Should Do​

If you are a KIT contributor:

• Review your KIT for any inconsistencies or missed items.
• If you find something, please create an issue — ideally followed by a pull request.
• Double-check that your KIT references the API Hub and embeds Swagger UI as needed.

Next Steps​

Following the merge of this large update (see pull request), here are a few post-update tasks:

• Review the changelog for broken links.
• Collect feedback and issues, and fix them when possible.
• Update license headers in 11 files.
• Tag the repository and remove outdated 24.08 KITs for improved performance.
• Update the contributor guidelines on how to adapt and work with KITs.
• Add the open meetings calendar to the documentation.

Preparation Checklist​

Group and Teams Sessions​

During the refinement sessions, each group will focus on the first steps of skeleton-building for their features (based on the feature template), mapping them to the related roadmap items. Don’t worry about completing every section of the feature template just yet — this is a time for brainstorming and forming initial ideas.

It's essential, however, to use the feature template and identify dependencies with other components or groups, which will help us add the correct labels to the features. You’re encouraged to collaborate across groups as needed, and we’ll provide Teams sessions for each group to work in.
