Adoption View

Introduction

A digital Maintenance Logbook transforms on-site service visits in the semiconductor subfab into a fully connected, standardized workflow.

By combining manually entered and automatically retrieved equipment data, service reports are documented in the standardized AAS (Asset Administration Shell) format and exchanged instantly via EDC (Eclipse Dataspace Connector), keeping all systems synchronized across company boundaries.

In practice, this scenario plays out as follows: a supplier's service technician carries out maintenance on abatement equipment within a manufacturer's subfab and records the service activity through a fully interoperable, cross-company data exchange.

Vision and Mission

Vision

To establish a connected, interoperable subfab ecosystem where standardized, real-time service data flows seamlessly across company boundaries β€” enabling predictive maintenance, data-driven decision-making, and continuous operational excellence across the semiconductor equipment lifecycle.

Mission

To replace fragmented, manual service documentation with a digital, standardized Maintenance Logbook that combines automated and manual data capture, exchanges service reports in the AAS format via EDC, and ensures every maintenance activity is transparently and consistently traceable across all stakeholders.

Business Context

Business Goals

  • Digitize and standardize service documentation
  • Enable seamless, automated data exchange between equipment suppliers, owners, and service providers
  • Improve data transparency, consistency, and traceability in cross-company service processes
  • Build the foundation for predictive maintenance and data analytics through harmonized service data
  • Ensure long-term sustainability and scalability of digital reporting infrastructure

Stakeholders

  • Equipment suppliers/Service providers performing on-site maintenance
  • Equipment owners/manufacturers operating the subfab infrastructure
  • Data integrator/infrastructure providers operating or maintaining the infrastructure
  • additional organizations (cross-company data-exchange partners) participating in the shared data space

Systems & Processes

  • Maintenance performed at abatement equipment (subfab)
  • Maintenance Logbook entry created via web GUI and automatically retrieved system parameters
  • Data stored in existing AAS infrastructure
  • Data exchanged across company boundaries via EDC
  • Fully synchronized maintenance platform ensuring up-to-date records across all connected systems

Pain Points

  • Service documentation in the subfab is currently fragmented
  • Data is often exchanged manually between disparate systems
  • Manual processes create inefficiencies and slow down service communication
  • Data silos limit visibility and consistency across company boundaries
  • Limited traceability hampers cross-company service and maintenance processes

Business Value

Faster, standardized service communication reduces response times and manual coordination effort between companies. Improved data transparency creates a reliable foundation for decision-making across all stakeholders and strengthens trust in cross-company collaboration.

Interoperable digital reporting ensures long-term sustainability of service processes, since systems and partners can work together seamlessly regardless of individual formats. This lowers integration costs and makes the organization more resilient to growing process complexity.

The resulting connected subfab ecosystem also unlocks concrete economic benefits and a scalable foundation for future data-driven services:

  • Predictive maintenance reduces unplanned downtime and maintenance costs through early fault detection.
  • Harmonized service data improves the quality of data analytics and provides reliable metrics for strategic decision-making.
  • Continuous operational optimization increases efficiency.
  • Efficient cross-company collaboration shortens time-to-resolution for service requests and strengthens partner relationships.

Semantic Models / Data Model

As part of the Semiconductor-X project's use case, the AAS Submodel Template Maintenance Logbook was developed. It is intended to be submitted for standardization to the Industrial Digital Twin Association (IDTA).

Standardization Status

The IDTA review process is currently on hold, consequently, no canonical semanticId (IRI) has been assigned to the template yet. This section will be updated with the assigned IDTA specification number and semanticId as soon as the review resumes and the template is published.

Template Artefact

The machine-readable template is available as JSON in the KIT repository: see smt_maintenancelogbook.json
